The working principle of flange planer is to cut through the linear reciprocating motion of planer and workpiece. The workpiece is fixed on the workbench for intermittent feeding. The planer removes material during the cutting stroke and the return stroke is idle. The working principle of planer is based on two kinds of motion: main motion and feed motion.

Main motion
The main motion of planer is the linear reciprocating motion of planer. During the cutting stroke, the tool contacts the workpiece and removes material; during the return stroke, the tool does not cut. This design enables planer to efficiently plan planes, forming surfaces and grooves on small and medium-sized workpieces in single-piece small batch production.

Feed motion
The feed motion is achieved through the intermittent movement of the workbench or planer. After each tool return stroke, the workbench drives the workpiece to move horizontally a certain distance (feed amount) to ensure that the next cutting can cover the unprocessed area. This intermittent feed motion enables planer to process various shapes such as planes, grooves, step surfaces, dovetail workpieces, T-slots, V-slots, etc.

Structural principle
The structure of the planer includes components such as sliding gear sets and gears. Planers can be divided into many types such as planers and gantry planers, which are widely used in the field of mechanical processing. Planers usually use crank rocker mechanisms for transmission, while large planers mostly use hydraulic transmission. Feed mechanisms such as ratchets control the movement accuracy of the workpiece to ensure the accuracy of processing.
